diptyque reinvigorating body balm

diptyque produce an anhydrous (without water) body balm, which if you know me, you’ll know is a matter close to my heart.

Never heard of the brand…

diptyque has a global presence but is a very French brand in its routes. It was started in the 1960s by three creative founders, whom expanded their range from textiles and fabrics to homeware.

It is a high-quality, luxury line of home fragrances (candles, diffusers), bodycare and personal fragrance products that has been around for 60 years+. Its instantly recognisable by the artwork on the labels. Its so uniquely retro and 1960s, but somehow still feels of this past decade.

I have been buying diptyque products for the past twenty years (yes, I am that age) and honestly, I have some favourites. The parfums and candles hit the right notes (another blog) for me, but today is about the this body balm…

What’s inside?

The ingredient list is surprising

Ingredient list: sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil – cera alba – cetearyl isononanoate – ethylhexyl stearate – parfum (fragrance) – persea gratissima (avocado) oil – prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernel oil – moringa pterygosperma seed oil – caprylic/capric triglyceride – helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil – citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel extract – citrus limon (lemon) peel oil – citrus nobilis (mandarin orange) peel oil – bixa orellana seed extract citrus sinensis extract – limonene – citronellol – geraniol – linalool – citral – cinnamal – eugenol – coumarin – tocopheryl acetate – bht – tocopherol.

Its unusual for products in the West to contain sesame seed oil (which is more commonly used in Ayurveda), but the principal ingredient here is sesame seed oil. What is also peculiar is that the product contains ZERO butters but just oils. Essentially what you are paying for is:

  • Sesame seed oil: benefits are that increases blood circulation when massaged into the skin, leaving skin soft and radiant. Also rich in Vitamins A, D and E.
  • Avocado oil: rich in Vitamin E and is excellent for those with dry skin as it helps moisturise the skin
  • Apricot oil
  • Moringa oil: rich in Vitamin C
  • Proprietary blend of fragrance.

What does the product smell, look and feel like

Smell

The smell is powdery and an old lady floral smell. I can’t say I detest it because its not in my top five least favourite aromas – but its close.

It reminds of a dated wannabe Chanel powdery fresh floral fragrance. If you are into that type of thing, then the plus side is the fragrance lasts a really long time.

The good thing is the fragrance stays on the skin for a long time.

Look and feel

The product is oily but blends in quickly and does not leave any shine or “oiliness” which is what I would expect because of its ingredient list. It leaves skin super-hydrated, soft and supple. I can imagine you would see real benefit to the skin with regular use.

Would I buy this product again?

This is a US$ 75 body balm for 100g and a little goes a long way.

Were it not for the fragrance I absolutely would consider buying this product again. But the price is high because there are no indications that the brand uses organic, cold pressed ingredients. Therefore, US$ 75 for a bunch of refined oils feels steep.

This is not for me – but if you are happy with the price point and fragrance, go ahead!
