5 tips for looking after your skin during Diwali

Tip 1: If you see food that is processed, sugary or oily, this is a no-no

I love my gulab jamuns as much as the next person. But I have also seen my mother make gulab jamuns and the amount of processed, refined, white sugar that goes into them – or Indian sweets generally – is enough to put anyone on a Type 2 diabetes fast-track.

I could produce a ton of studies and evidence, but you and I now know that excessive sugar, processed food, oil, butter, ghee is terrible for your skin as is diary. I know a lot of folks argue that diary is not bad for your skin, but they have not met Cystic or Nodular acne.

There is also psychological stress of too much partying. firstwoldproblems? I have a cousin sister who can have Chinese for dinner and will break-out (literally) into hives the next day. And no allergies have been detected to date…

Tip 2: For every glass of wine, drink 2 glasses of water

Alcohol and smoking are terrible for your skin. They immediately increase free radical activity, which damages your skin as well as dehydrating your skin. And I don’t need to tell you that you foundation and make-up hate dry skin.

Tip 3: Take all your make-up off before you sleep

This is a no-brainer. Your make-up will clog your pores and not to mention put your eyelashes under undue strain.

Also, avoid using setting sprays. You need to double or triple cleanse before all my make-up comes off.

Try and use a Hyaluronic acid at least before bed. This provides excellent hydration to dry skin and as it is naturally present in our bodies, uptake is excellent.

This is a good product that I have recently tested.

Tip 4: Use your own make-up and avoid setting sprays

Many of us will be using the services of a make-up artist or going to a beauty salon. These are hotbeds for infection, especially if brushes are not sterilised properly. I carry my own brushes, foundation and mascara as a bare minimum. Importantly, I insist on everyone who touches my face using this hand sanitizer.

I am totally OK being OTT about skin hygiene. So should you.

Tip 5: Hydrate, hydrate and hydrate

If you hate drinking a ton of water then add wafer thin lemon, orange, cucumber slices to your water.
