Happy Skin Days sunscreen test
In deciding whether or not to use a product I apply the following very basic sunscreen test
1) Harmful chemicals present?
The first set of harmful chemical present are parabens, which are cheap and effective preservatives. They are also estrogen mimickers and if you are thinking PCOS, then you are not the only one. The second harmful chemical is Oxybenzone, a UVA and UVB filter. This is also a hormonal disruptor and a known skin allergen. (For more information, see Chemicals to Avoid – Parabens., Chemicals To Avoid – Benzophenone-3)
3) UVA and UVB filters present?
Both UVA and UVB have both been implicated in skin cancer and photo-aging and we want filters to protect against both types of damage.
Filters in this product are:
- Octinoxate (2nd ingredient)
- Methylene Bis-Benzotriaxolyl Tetramethyldbutylphenol (4th ingredient)
- Oxybenzone (9th ingredient)
MBBT is mainly a UVA filter but also provides some UVB protection. MBBT is a photostable filter that works well with Octinoxate (a UVB filter). This filter does not need to be present in a large quantity for it to provide effective UVA protection. Oxybenzone provides weak protection in the UVA region.
It is pushing the envelope to suggest this product provides PA+++ because I think that requires MBBT at about 5%+. I’d be more satisfied in suggesting this provides PA++ protection. To remind you, this is what the PA labelling system means:
