Worst skincare products – 2020 edition

This blog may be the easiest I have had to write in a long time, as awful products really stick in your memory. Much like the guys I have dated, the main challenge was there were so many too choose from.

As I am an independent, non-affiliated blogger this particular blog reflects my unbiased opinion and experience of using said products.

To make the cut, the products have satisfied at least one condition:

  1. The product does not deliver on what it says it will do
  2. Unbearable smell/stench or other physical design fault in the product
  3. The retail price of the product is disproportionate to the value for money offered.

1. NIOD Flavanone Mud face mask

Available at NIOD. Retail price is US$ 45 for 50ml

I am not going to be repurchasing this product because the first time I used this product, the resulting stinging I experienced was both unexpected and quite vicious. See my review

2. NIOD Re-pigment

Available at NIOD. Retail price is US$ 45 for 15ml

This is a skin brightener that is designed to target hyper-pigmentation. It uses a derivative of Azelaic Acid (finally a product that does. See Skin Ingredient focus: Azelaic Acid)

My experience of using this product was nothing short of a calamity. I became a few shades darker than what I was at the start of using this product. See my review

3. Juicy Chemistry’s Neroli, Rosehip & Tamanu body butter

Available at Juicy Chemistry. Retail price is INR 850, but I bought it at a 40% discount for INR 510.

Frankly, if I wanted to walk around smelling like cow’s urine, it is reasonable to assume that this is not done voluntarily. I would expect that I was by some inexplicable reason actually sprayed with cow’s urine. In case you are wondering why I am writing about a bovine waste by-product, well its because this body butter smells like cow’s urine. Enough said.

4. Kama Survana Haldi chandan clay mask

Available for sale at Kama Ayurveda or Nykaa. Retail price is INR 1,595 for 40g

Be in no doubt that this product delivers what it says it will, namely skin lightening. I truly think that consistent use of this product will help your skin even out in complexion. However, the smell of sandalwood oil and turmeric for me is unbearable and it lingers long past washing your face. I dislike the smell to such an extent that I am happy with my pigmented and uneven skin.

5 izil rosy glow toner

Available for sale at izil’s website

The one thing I absolutely hate doing is disparaging new brands especially given the difficulties we now face. But this product at US$34 had sediment deposit of I don’t know what. Even vigorous shaking of the product did not dissolve the sediments. This really is unacceptable.

6 Uma Ultimate Brightening Face Mask

Like Kama’s mask above, this product does what it says it will do: namely brightening. However, at US$70, I do not expect the product to look like this:

especially when the image on the parent website is this:

The feedback from Uma’s customer service was simply odd. You can read about it at my review here
