Fabindia Night cream – moisturiser

This is essentially the night cream version of the Fabindia de-pigmentation cream that I have previously reviewed.

1) Does this product contain harmful chemicals?

Yes.

It contains Parabens (methyl- and propyl- parabens) and Imidazolidinyl Urea. I avoid parabens because they are estrogen mimickers. (See also Chemicals to Avoid – Parabens) and Imidazolidinyl Urea as it is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative. Formaldehyde is a chemical used in embalming.

I respect your prerogative to use product containing both of these chemicals. Please continue reading.

2) What is the texture and feel of the product?

This is surprisingly a much lighter textured product then the de-pigmentation cream (see blog below).

I find the cream a bit sticky and has very artificial fragrance, that is not unpleasant.

3) What are the really great ingredients in this product?

This product has three ingredients: glycerin, shea butter and Vitamin E that draw my attention.

And as glycerin is listed as the 3rd ingredient, it is the most abundant and noteworthy ingredient here.

How does glycerin hydrate the skin?

Baumman writes, “App et al compared 2 high glycerin moisturizers to 16 other popular moisturizers in 394 patients with severely dry skin.  The high glycerin products were superior to all other products tested over this five year period because they rapidly restored dry skin to normal hydration levels.  They also helped prevent the return to dryness for a long period than the other formulations, even those containing petroluatum.

Glycerin causes an expansion of the stratum corneum because of increased thickness of the corneocytes and expanded spaces between layers and corneocytes.  These findings suggest that glycerin appears to create a reservoir of moisturing holding ability that renders the skin more resistant to drying.”

In short, topically applied glycerin restores Stratum Corneum hydration.  Endogenous glycerin (ie, glycerin already in the skin) is essential to maintaining skin hydration.

4) Would I buy this product?

At INR 450 for 100ml, it really is cheap as chips. But just remember that the only thing that you are buying is glycerin – and that’s ok. At INR 450 you should not expect anything more.

I would have been tempted if the product did not have such a synthetic smell and did not contain parabens and Imidazolidinyl Urea.

Available for sale at Fabindia.
