In my recent 40 day road-test (see this BLOG), the cleanser I choose was YourGoodSkin Brightening Exfoliating Wash. YourGoodSkin is a British high street pharmacy offering and is quite a cheap product.
Face wash test
In deciding whether or not to use a facewash, I apply this quite rudimentary and basic test of my own design:
1) What are the cleansing agents (surfactants) present?
The product has multiple surfactants and this trend of multiple surfactants is a very non-Indian brand thing. The surfactants present are:
- Cocoamidopropyl betaine
- Lauryl glucoside
- Disodium Laureth sulfosuccinate (DLS)
- Sodium cocamphoacetate (SC)
- Coco-glucoside
Some of these surfactants are more mild than others. Eg DLS and SC are both found in baby products. However, the entire combination of these surfactants does not produce a mild facewash (as I was expecting).
2) Does the product have a good preservative system?
Yes, absent from the product are preservatives such as parabens or formaldehyde releasing preservatives or allergens.
3) Does the product contain glycerin?
Yes, this product has glycerine. Glycerine keeps the skin hydrated by reducing the amount of trans-epidermal water loss.

4) Does the product irritate or dry the skin?
Yes, it does and hence this product review that is 35 days early.
I intended to use this face wash for the 40 day duration of my multi-product road test BUT unfortunately even when I use small amounts of the face wash there is no getting away from the exfoliating, very physical action on my skin.
My skin is left tighter and a bit drier each time I use this face wash and over a 40 day period, I am concerned that I will do serious damage to my skin barrier.
Unfortunately, this product is too harsh for my face.
Would I buy this product again?
Despite being perfectly fine on paper, this is not a product for me. Sorry. I won’t be purchasing this again.
It’s available for sale at Boot’s pharmacies in the UK.
What will I be using instead of this facewash?
I have been meaning to use this cleansing balm for ages. It’s not a budget product, but I’d like to try it out given how much mineral sunscreen I am using at the moment!
