Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser

In deciding whether or not to use a facewash, I apply this quite rudimentary and basic test of my own design:

1) What are the cleansing agents (surfactants) present?

Product NameSurfactant 1Surfactant 2Surfactant 3Surfactant 4
cetaphil oily skin cleanserPEG-200 hydrogenated glyceryl palmitate (2nd)PEG-7 glyceryl cocoate (3rd)Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate (4th)Sodium Laureth sulfate (7th)

This trend of multiple surfactants is a very non-Indian brand thing. There are synergies to using different types of surfactants. For example, some surfactants are present because they are supremely mild (Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate) and some to make foam & give stability (Sodium Laureth Sulfate).

The above blend of surfactants is mild.

2) Does the product have a good preservative system?

No. The product contains Methyl parahydroxybenzoate or more commonly, methylparaben. You should note that regulators approve the use of methylparaben. But like Oprah, I believe you are either going to be OK with parabens or not at all. There is no half-way house.

I don’t use products with parabens. Parabens are cheap and effective preservatives. They are also estrogen mimickers and if you are thinking PCOS, then you are not the only one. (See also Chemicals to Avoid: parabens)

If you wish to use this product, because you don’t care about the nature of chemicals it contains, then please continue reading.

3) Does the product have glycerin?

Yes, this product has glycerine. Glycerine keeps the skin hydrated by reducing the amount of trans-epidermal water loss.

4) Does the product irritate or dry the skin?

The facewash, produces big bubbles but is not drying at all. If this is for oily skin then its amazing. Pleasant smelling – like a baby product. Marginally better than innisfree or on par in terms of leaving the skin completely hyrdated / not dry at all.

What is my view?

I won’t be using this product because it contains parabens. If I ignore the paraben-content, would I use it? Without doubt this would become a regular product in my bathroom cabinet.
