This is one of Garnier’s fairness creams that occupies every pharmacy and mom & shop in India.
I will be applying this test
Q1) Are harmful chemicals present?
I look for BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene), parabens, Benzophenone-4. These are not present in this product.
Q2 + Q3) Are skin lightening ingredients present and the strategy for skin lightening?
Skin lightening ingredients are present
The skin lighteners are Ascorbyl Glucoside and the ACB mix* (see below), which I have come across in fresh Vitamin mask.
Ascorbyl glucoside is a form of Vitamin C, which is both an anti-oxidant and tyrosinase inhibitor as amongst other things, it chelates Copper at the site of the Tyrosinase enzyme, therefore reducing the product of (dark) melanin.
The problem with this formulation is that the Ascorbyl Glucoside is listed as the 12th ingredient in the list. That means the amount of Vitamin C in this product is quite low to have a meaningful impact.
The ACB is a mix of fruit that has AHA (and therefore is exfoliating). Other benefits include skin brightening and moisturizing. The manufacturer of the ACB mix recommends is present in 1%-10% to be effective. Given how low down the list the components of the ACB mix are, it is difficult for me to assume that they are present in quantities greater than 1%.
Closing remarks
I will not be buying this product again. It has all the components to be a fantastic skin lightening product, but I won’t live forever and I am afraid that even an eternity may not be enough for this product to give effective skin lightening.
Notes
*The ACB mix is made up of Water & Vaccinium Myrtillus Fruit/Leaf Extract & Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract & Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract & Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract & Acer Saccharum (Sugar Maple) Extract.
