Juicy Chemistry Jasmine, Lemon & Tea Body Butter

This is the second body butter from Juicy Chemistry that I am road-testing. Honestly, the first was such a disappoint that my expectations of this body butter were embarrassingly low.

But first, who are Juicy Chemistry?

Juicy Chemistry is an ECOCERT brand that uses certified organic ingredients. This certification allows me to have confidence that the quality of their ingredients is second to none. As the skin is our largest organ, using products that are of very high quality is common sense. Juicy Chemistry’s products appear to be cheap as chips and one reason maybe they come in small sizes. Think Rs 1 shampoo satchets – while you believe the product is cheap, the quantity is so small that they offer manufacturers huge profit margins.

I love the packaging of Juicy Chemistry: their non-plastic laminated paper packaging, and their containers are excellent. Kama Ayurveda and Forest Essential’s would do better if they took a leaf out of Juicy Chemistry’s book. The husband-wife founder story is quite famous, and this is a link to their website.

The body butter

There is some graininess to the top of the butter, which is what you should expect with products that have no water. Thankfully, the rest of the butter itself is a smooth concoction.

What do I think?

I have been using this product for a few days – every alternate day – as my skin is not dry enough to need a body butter every day. The product leaves my skin smooth and supple, which is not a surprise given the large amounts of mainly shea and cocoa butters contained in the product. And it is fantastic for the skin as it also contains mositurising oils such as coconut and jojoba oil.

Please note that I use small quantities of the product because the smell is quite powerful. Also, I don’t cover every inch of my body with the body butter – I am chubby and that would take forever.

The INR 750 question: will I buy it again?

I’ll readily admit to the fact that 100% of the time, I don’t always look at the back of a product for instructions for use. I mean, its a body butter – how complicated can it be?

Schoolboy error. This is absolutely one of those products where you should follow the instructions.

Directions Use: Massage over damp skin right after a shower. Pay special attention to trouble spots like elbows and knees.

What’s the big deal?

Using this product on damp skin, results in the butter quickly being absorbed by the skin leaving a slight sheen on your skin. Importantly, the smell is of muted jasmine and its extremely pleasant. I would use this product again and I can see why its constantly out of stock on Juicy Chemistry’s website. Plus at INR 750 for 75g this is an absolute bargain and a treasure trove. Given what an awful start to 2021 we have had (yes, I am a wannabe American), I am delighted that this product has come my way.

What NOT to do

My failure to read the initial instructions on day one and use this product on dry skin, can only be described as a catastrophic disaster. The problem like the Neroli, Rosehip and Tamanu body butter is the smell.

On initial application to dry skin, the resulting smell is of jasmine with a note of mothballs. Its a musty smell and the butter dissolves into the skin to leave a very oily finish (nothing that can’t be wiped off).

As time goes by, the jasmine smell becomes more sharper and completely overpowering. If you like that very Indian jasmine smell that you find everything from mothballs to incense sticks and perfume, I would hazard a guess that you’d be fine with this butter.

However, I am not ok with this smell and I am so thankful that I read the instructions!

Available for sale at Juicy Chemistry for INR 750. I bought this product during a seasonal sale at 30% off or INR 525.
