This blog will be by all accounts, be short and sweet.
1) What are the quantity of the UV filters?
In the US, as OTC drugs, sunscreens are required to disclose information about the % quantity of each UV filter in the sunscreen.
This sunscreen has following % filters, which total 16.5% in total.
- Avobenzone 2%
- Octinoxate 7.5%
- Octisalate 5%
- Octocrylene 2%
2) What type of product is this?
It’s clearly an emulsion and therefore, we can fully expect it to have
- Emulsifier (s)
- Stabilisers/Rheology modifiers
- Solvent for the oil soluble filters (Avobenzone)
- Silicones (because otherwise the sunscreen would be very tacky. Remember 16,5% is a serious amount of filter to have in product)
- Actives
2a) Emulsifiers are…
As far as I can tell the emulsifiers are:
- Hydrogenated Lecithin
- Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer (co-emulsifier)
2b) Stabilisers/Thickeners/Rheology modifiers are
- Xanthan Gum
- Could be Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer
- Sodium Carbomer
2c) Silicones are…
- Dimethicone (and) Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, which is essentially used to reduce tackiness in the formula
3) Actives are
- Anti-inflammatory + calming
- Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract
- Avena Sativa (Oat) Bran Extract,
- Anti-oxidants
- Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract,
- Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract,
- Camellia Oleifera (Green Tea) Leaf Extract
- Anti-ageing properties
- Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract,
- Lycium Barbarum (Goji berry) Extract
4) Preservatives
Principal preservative is Phenoxyethanol.
