No 18 on the Sephora Bestseller sunscreen list, is this SPF 35 sunscreen, which is in fact a tinted moisturizer.
It’s also a Zinc Oxide only sunscreen. Looking at the texture of the sunscreen, you can immediately tell that the Zinc Oxide is a nano-form. In the US (unlike the EU), its not mandatory to disclose the nano status of ingredients on labels. In the EU, it is mandatory for nano Zinc Oxide to appear as Zinc Oxide (nano)
1) Haven’t heard of this brand…
The brand story is testament to what the ROW (including India) can and should learn from the US because it is replicable if you have a tenacious founder.
In essence, this is their playbook
- Decide a sector/industry that you want to target – this case beauty/makeup and skincare
- Find best talent to support you b/c you don’t know anything about marketing, product formulation etc – so hire in
- Get $$$ (funding)
- Then engage the maximum amount of early adopters of new products for product development
- Use their feedback to develop product. Go through many iterations quickly
- Launch
The fact of the matter is, so many things can go wrong: BUT if you turn up every day and do the grunt work, then consistency will pay off. You only need to be one step ahead of the competition to win sometimes.
2) Tell me about this product?
The product is a tinted mineral sunscreen and that immediately tells you to expect 3-4 things: mineral UV filters, colorants (pigments), Mica (because its shiny) and the presence of any other ingredient that supports nano hypothesis.
3) UV filter
Zinc Oxide is a broadspectrum, photostable UV filter, providing protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.
4) Type of product
Like many sunscreens in the Sephora list, this is also a oil in water emulsion, with a basic emulsifier system, but with ingredients that support the structure. Here there are a bunch of gums that give stability to the product (and of course, also contribute to viscosity)
