Brillare Skin Lightening creme

I will be applying this test

This is an unashamedly simple product. It has no harmful chemicals that I look for and therefore all that remains is to highlight the ONLY skin lightener in this product: Niacinamide.

Niacinamide is present as the 3rd ingredient, indicating sufficient quantities to cause skin lightening. Just in case, the product also has Lecithin, which is a skin penetration enhancer.

Niacinamide is an excellent skincare ingredient. It has a long track record of safety, is non-irritating, and importantly, does not interfere directly with the production of synthesis of melanin. Melanin is the pigment that is primarily responsible for our skin colour (see also What gives our skin its colour?)

Instead, Niacinamide reduces the amount of melanin being transferred to the epidermis (the topmost layer of our skin). By default, this means lighter skin.

(Technically, Niacinamide achieves this by downregulating the transfer of melanosomes from melanocytes to keratinocytes by 35% – 68%.  That is a lot of skin lightening).

Would I buy this product?

This is likely to be a good skin lightening product. Note that after 4 weeks of using Niacinamide in topical treatments, studies have found that the impact of the ingredient plateaus. This is not a unique issue with Niacinamide but also applies to other skin lighteners such as retinoids.

For further information, please see Niacinamide as a skin lightener.

If you do plan use to use this product, please absolutely use a separate sunscreen product with at least an SPF 30.
