Clinique SPF 50 UVA/UVB Mineral Sunscreen Fluid For Face

Introduction

Precisely a year ago, I reviewed this sunscreen (click on LINK for review). The fundamental problem I had with the formulation was that it only contained one filter, Titanium Dioxide.

In all the 200+ sunscreens I have reviewed I hadn’t once come up across such an unusual formulation.

While Titanium Dioxide is a photostable, extremely safe broadspectrum filter it ONLY provides superior protection against UVB but not great protection against UVA.

It is essential that sunscreen also has UVA filters to prevent against the following damages:

Titanium Dioxide by itself..

This is Titanium Dioxide at 6.3%. It provides superior UVB protection but as soon as it hits UVA II (320nm), performance becomes sub-optimal. By the time we reach 360nm (proper UVA I region), the protection drops by 50%.

Why a new review?

The formulation has been revised to include Titanium Dioxide at 6.3% and Zinc Oxide at 4% (click on LINK for revised ingredient list).

As you can see from the graph below, this product provides superior UVB protection and the UVA protection is much more improved than the graph above – essentially the area under the line, especially the blue shaded area starting at 340nm, is much larger in this graph than the above.

Closing

I would now buy this sunscreen.

At the time of writing (end of April 2020), this sunscreen is 30 percent cheaper on Clinique’s USA website. It’s also available for sale at Nykaa (click link here). Naturally, if you can, buy it in the USA.

Before I close, I’ll leave you with my email address email@happyskindays.com and how to incorporate sunscreen into your daily life.
