What am I testing?
The product describes itself as “SOFT CLAY RUBBER” describing its function as a “No-bits exfoliant and mask in one.”
This is a very different exfoliator to a traditional AHA / BHA product (think, The Ordinary’s 10% Glycolic Acid toner), which function by encouraging cellular turnover (or desquamation – see this link). This has protein metabolising enzymes: protease and subtilisin. If you are thinking “protease” sounds familiar, that’s because its actually found in your small intestine, where it digests dietary proteins to allow absorption of amino acids.
The product it is most similar to is Wishful’s You Glow Enzyme scrub, which contains papaya and pineapple enzyme’s along with AHA and BHAs.
The mechanism of action is to breakdown the keratinocyte (dead protein) cells on the topmost surface of your skin. This reveals “newer” skin that has not been exposed to the elements.
But its also a mask?
Yes, the clay base allows you to keep the product on for longer and then it acts as a mask.
Before and after photos
Verdict and would I buy this again?
This is an unappealing blob when I opened the product, but unlike UMA’s brightening mask, this was easily spreadable on my face
As soon as I applied the product, I massaged it into my skin, preferring to use it as an exfoliator (and not a mask). This product stings – more than the Vitamin C paste – principally, because it contains peppermint oil.
Dead cells were removed by the mask – not a tremendous amount but that’s OK. The exfoliator did leave my skin quite tight and there was a slight burning sensation that lasted about an hour. This is not a sensitive skin product.
This is a gentler product than Wishful’s Yo Glow Enzyme Scrub, but I will be honest with you, the Wishful product is a superior exfoliator. With this product, I am so concerned about the amount of stinging that I won’t use it beyond a minute. Wishful is a strong product but it didn’t sting or burn.
Quite frankly, I may use it once every ten days but as with the Vitamin C paste, if I don’t have it I won’t miss it. I am really not rushing out to buy this product.
Available for sale at cultbeauty for £28 (60ml) or US$ 34 (60ml).
