L’Oreal Paris UV Perfect Even Complexion SPF 50+

Introduction

I reviewed this sunscreen in May 2019 and despite it providing excellent coverage, it also had parabens, which prevented me from recommending its use. (see LINK here).

The product is on Nykaa’s sunscreen bestseller list. Also, the formulation has been slightly modified to exclude parabens…But now it contains BHT. There is simply no winning for me.

If you are completely comfortable wearing sunscreen that has BHT, then that’s absolutely your prerogative to do so. It’s your body and health. There are very few sunscreens that provided better coverage against UVA and UVB radiation then this product. Additionally as of 28 April 2020, this is priced at Rs 515 for 30ml on Nykaa (click HERE), making this an extremely affordable sunscreen.

Drop me a line at email@happyskindays.com if you have any comments or questions. I’d love to hear from you.

Harmful chemicals present?

BHT: is a preservative and it’s the policy of this blog to avoid products containing BHT.  David Suzuki’s excellent explanation is, “Limited evidence suggests that high doses of BHT may mimic estrogen, the primary female sex hormone and prevent the expression of male sex hormones, resulting in adverse reproductive effects.”

This is an SPF 50+ product with an exceptional combination of both UVA and UVB filters

Just to remind you, filters should protect against the deleterious effects of both UVA and UVB radiation:

Filters present are:

UVB: Octinoxate (2nd ingredient)

Broadspectrum filters:

  • Drometrizoletrisiloxane (3rd ingredient)
  • Titanium Dioxide (7th ingredient)
  • Terephthalylidene Dicamphor Sulfonic Acid (8th ingredient) (“TDSA”)
  • Diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl Benzoate (9th ingredient) (“DHHB”)
  • Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (10th ingredient) (“BEMT”)

You can take my word for it that given the quantity and quality of filters in this product it:

  • is an SPF 50+ product
  • provides superior UVA protection based on my reading of its ingredient label. There is no doubt that this provides PA++++ protection, which means it is extremely effective against UVA.

****GEEK LEVEL DETAIL ON FILTERS******

Both BEMT and DHHB are new style filters that are photostable, are large molecules (and therefore do not penetrate the skin), and do not need to be present in high percentage quantities to give effective protection. BEMT provides superior UVB protection as well as UVA protection, tapering off around 360nm, indicating its not as good as Avobenzone. DHHB provides superior UVAII / UVA I protection, peaking between 350nm-360nm.

Drometrizole Trisiloxane is a very photostable broadspectrum filter that provides pretty excellent coverage over the entire UVB region and UVA II region.  It peaks at about 350nm and then begins to taper off in absorbance post 350nm.

Titanium Dioxide is also a broadspectrum filter that provides better UVB protection then it does UVA.

Terephthalyldiene dicamphor sulfonic Acid: this is also a broadspectrum filter that provides better UVAI protection.
