Make-up mistakes to avoid at an Indian wedding

Social media – the new Saas in Kyunki Saas bi Kabhi Bahu thi

The social media age has given Kylie Jenner a billion dollars and to me, its given me an endless epic of cringeworthy photos from a recent wedding. Truly, there is no hiding from this new Saas, as the photos are taken from so many angles, you’d be tempted to think everyone with a smartphone is a part-time circus perfomer and/or Olympic gymnast.

Like any dutiful wedding attendee, I bought SO MUCH shiny, glitter make-up (see featured image) – that you’d think it was my own wedding. It was not. The net result is a shiny/glitter/dewy look that bears striking resemblance to a 1970s disco ball.

Thankfully, many Aunties also gave me company in the Bihari rendition of the Game of Thrones. The make-up line recently launched on Urban Decay, accurately depicts the “kajal spreading” phenomenon that Aunties experience.

Ordinarily, my make-up is excellent (except on occasion, my lip colour) and this is a short guide on make-up mistakes to avoid:

1) Daylight is your friend

Get your base (primer, foundation, concealer etc) of your make-up on during daylight, especially if its a destination wedding at (eg) a fort in the middle of nowhere, where light is scarce….  Unless you have car headlamps in your room, you’ll not be able to see properly AND its then very difficult to know when to STOP applying foundation, concealer and eyeshadow.

2) Blending is your lifeline

If daylight is your friend, then blending is your lifeline. Please, please blend, blend and then (you guessed it), blend again. Nothing looks worse then cakey make-up and as at least some events will be held outside (in 45 C temperature), the prevailing sunlight will be an unforgiving taskmaster.

3) Stay matte from base to make-up fixer

I am guilty of loving the dewy look (and glitter) as is evident from my Ms. Disco Ball look – who gives themselves a shiny chin AND highlights their wrinkles??? This is not a camera friendly look…Use highlighters sparingly.  If you are going to use a glitter eyeshadow either a subtle dab in the middle of your eyelid is MORE than enough.

4) Don’t be an Aunty

Its not cool to match lipstick, nail varnish, shoes and handbag to your outfit. If your outfit is fuschia pink with gold sequin, then the make up answer is not matching pink eyeshadow, lip colour and nail varnish. When in doubt, select your nude lipstick.

Also, don’t use a lipliner that is darker than your lip colour. Outlining your lips in black/maroon and then filling it in with a lighter lipstick shade is how vampires and Goths dress. Its a wedding not an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

5) Match foundation to your ACTUAL skin colour

Its not cool when girls use foundations that are two shades lighter, mainly because they forget to
“paint” their ears, neck, decolletage, hands and arms all the same colour – it just looks as if you are trying too hard….

I mean it just looks fake – don’t take my word for it look at Donald Trump’s complexion and its close resemblance to an orange slice…
