NIVEA facewash for normal skin

In deciding whether or not to use a facewash, I apply this quite rudimentary and basic test of my own design:

1) What are the cleansing agents (surfactants) present?

Product NameSurfactant 1Surfactant 2Surfactant 3
Nivea face wash Vitamin E & Hydra IQ (normal skin)Cocamido propyl betaine (2nd)Sodium myreth sulfate (3rd)Lauryl Glucoside (11th)

Cocamidopropyl Betaine is a mild surfactant and its present because it reduces the irritation potential of the other sulphate based detergents. Lauryl glucoside (which is also used in natural skincare formulations) is also a mild surfactant.

I think this is a mild blend of surfactants

2) Does the product have a good preservative system?

No. The product contains parabens. You should note that regulators approve the use of specific parabens, including the ones listed in this product. But like Oprah, I believe you are either going to be OK with parabens or not at all. There is no half-way house.

I don’t use products with parabens. Parabens are cheap and effective preservatives. They are also estrogen mimickers and if you are thinking PCOS, then you are not the only one. (See also Chemicals to Avoid: parabens)

3) Does the product have glycerin?

Yes, this product has glycerine. Glycerine keeps the skin hydrated by reducing the amount of trans-epidermal water loss.

4) Does the product irritate or dry the skin?

The facewash, like a lot of NIVEA products smells really nice. It is like a baby product that is suited to adults.

The product does not foam wash and is not drying. Only innisfree, kaya and cetaphil produce less drying products.

What is my view?

I don’t knowingly use parabens in my products. But if you are OK with parabens, then at this price-point this is a formidably excellent product that is not drying on the skin at all.
