I constantly use different sunscreens. I go to a pharmacy, I try out sunscreens. If I accidentally find myself in a supermarket or a grocery store, I find sunscreens. I go to a bookstore, I ask about sun protection books…
I have reviewed hundreds and hundreds of sunscreens since I started this blog…
There are so many sunscreens that are great – its so different to pre COVID, when quite frankly everything was pants (English slang for very rubbish. Don’t even get started on Lotus Herbal sunscreens, which I have not thrown away for posterity value).

Criteria for today’s selection
I have reviewed most of the sunscreen’s as part of my work. They all pass this test:
Today’s list is very much the sunscreens that I regularly use. At any one time, I have about 3-4 sunscreens on the go, and I aim to finish them as quickly as possible. I feel this does offer a better comparison of products.
This blog could be titled: what do you have in your bathroom…
When do I apply sunscreen?
- First thing in the morning
- If I am leaving the house I will reapply sunscreen 20 minutes before I leave. If I leave the house 3 times a day and return between 10am-4pm, I reapply sunscreen 3 times because the intensity of UV radiation where I live is sky-high
- I use sunscreen EVERYDAY.
Aesthetic value
I hate sunscreen that causes eye sting and unfortunately for me, that is a lot of Bioderma sunscreens. HOWEVER, they make the list because they are absolutely brilliant sunscreens in terms of the protection they offer against UVA and UVB radiation. Note that I have dropped Avene and Altruist, because I find that difficult to use and I haven’t bought them for at least 24 months.
No 1: Ultrasun Anti-pigmentation SPF 50
I am not even going to apologise for the fact that this is difficult to blend in AND can leave a whitecast. My clients who consistently apply Ultrasun have tremendously benefitted in terms of NOT getting pigmentation. Pigmentation is one of the first signs of photodamage and I attribute this to Ultrasun, which has a strong anti-oxidant Ecotin present in its sunscreen.
No 2: Prevage Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 by Elizabeth Arden
I love this sunscreen even though it’s a mineral sunscreen and offers inferior protection to Ultrasun. I usually don’t advocate a US$ 50+ sunscreen but this is one such product. It leaves a completely matte finish and as a tinted sunscreen means I can skip foundation + finishing powder.
Despite being ridiculously moist in application + not drying, I do find it causes my skin to flake after a few days of use. Therefore not a sunscreen for dry skin
No 3: La Roche Anthelios SPF 50
There is absolutely no doubt this sunscreen is superior in terms of the protection against UVB and UVA radiation. I have reluctantly used this over the past 12 months because I find it drying. However, if you are aiming to protect your skin against photodamage – fine lines, wrinkles – then you will be hard pressed to use a better sunscreen
No 4: Vichy Sunscreen Capital Soleil SPF 50
Vichy is a French Pharmacy brand sunscreen that produces a very limited number of sunscreens – its easy to blend and it does not cause eye sting – it also has superior UVA and UVB filters.

No 5: Bioderma Sunscreens
I hate the fact that this sunscreen range causes eye sting to such an extent that I have to wash my face. HOWEVER, this is a superior sunscreen offering brilliant protection against UVA + UVB radiation.
NOT all the sunscreens are amazing – some are difficult to use, so please do have a read of my blogs before you buy
