juicy chemistry rose and fig lip balm

I have a love-hate (or mainly just hate) relationship with juicy chemistry. If you have no idea who they are, then let’s start with that:

Who are Juicy Chemistry?

Juicy Chemistry is an ECOCERT brand that uses certified organic ingredients. This certification allows me to have confidence that the quality of their ingredients is second to none. As the skin is our largest organ, using products that are of very high quality is common sense. Juicy Chemistry’s products appear to be cheap as chips and one reason maybe they come in small sizes. Think Rs 1 shampoo satchets – while you believe the product is cheap, the quantity is so small that they offer manufacturers huge profit margins.

I love the packaging of Juicy Chemistry: their non-plastic laminated paper packaging, and their containers are excellent. Kama Ayurveda and Forest Essential’s would do better if they took a leaf out of Juicy Chemistry’s book. The husband-wife founder story is quite famous, and this is a link to their website.

I have mixed feelings over the products I have reviewed and I was totally expecting to hate this lip balm.

What am I testing?

I’ve been using this lip balm for about a week. It’s a Rose and Fig lip balm, whose ingredients include:

  • Castor seed oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Cocoa butter
  • Coconut oil
  • Raspberry seed oil
  • Oils that contribute to smell (rose and fig)
  • and beeswax

As beeswax actually comes from bees, this is not a vegan product. I suspect the amount of castor seed oil makes this very similar to Biossance’s Squalane and Rose oil lip balm.

Castor seed oil is commonly used in lipsticks – it gives a shine which is not the glossy heavy finish of Vaseline, but a more subtle glossy finish. In lip products its used as an emollient and has very low toxicity.

In this product, the combination of castor seed oil and cocoa butter, gives a pleasant sheen. I am surprised and I really, really like it.

Would I buy this product again?

Yes.

I have previously written how you really need to give other lip balms a week before your lips adjust to them: not this lip balm. My lips immediately liked this product – they do leave my lips feeling softer and hydrated. There is also less flaking or drying of skin, indicating the product is deeply moisturising (you would expect this of products containing coconut oil).

The only downsides are:

  • You have to constantly reapply throughout the day, which is symptomatic of a low price-point balm
  • The smell (and by default) the taste of the balm is strong (but not lingering) rose. If you are not keen on rose then you are going to struggle. I like rose and after the first day, I noticed the strong fragrance less.

At Rs 400 for a 5g product, this is formidably excellent value for money and as soon as the lockdown is over, I will be getting more of this product.

Just in case you are wondering, I definitely prefer it to Biossance’s rose vegan lip balm.

Other juicy chemistry products I have reviewed
