What is an Advent calendar?

“Advent” means Coming in Latin and an advent calendar counts the days to Christmas. In the calendar above, there are 25 numbered drawer and you open a drawer/day and it will reveal a present (e.g.) a haircare product, skincare product etc, etc.

My purpose today?

The purpose of this blog is to allocate a monetary value $$$/£££ to the products in the calendar.

This is important because with so many products its super-confusing to know what your money buys you.

Ask yourself, “how much of the products in the calendar are you really going to use?” Then, allocate a monetary value based on my calculations below.

E.g., if you only like the make up in this calendar, then the monetary value of the make up is less than £100 (see below)…

Charlotte Tilbury lipstick (£25), and
Hourglass lighting powder (£5).

Ask yourself, should you pay £240 for this calendar, if you only plan to use £100 of product…

Net-a-Porter 2020 Advent Calendar

Retail price is £240. Launched. Expected value given by seller, is about GBP 1,000.

Apart from a Charlotte Tilbury lipstick, Net-a-Porter have disclosed all sizes (see below), and based on these, I believe the seller’s estimate of £1,000 is accurate.

Allocation between categories

All prices are from Net-a-PorterUK website (UK retail prices so VAT inclusive). “A” is the quantity of the full sized product. “B” is the price (£) for the full sized product. “C” is the quantity of the product in the Advent Calendar. “D” is calculated as (C/A)*B. “E” is calculated as D/F expresses as a percentage. P.S. As Alexander Pope wrote, “To err is human, to forgive divine” so my calculations may have errors. Don’t shoot me, tell me.

This calendar is about skincare, forming £674 or 68% of the monetary value as follows:

What do I think?

The absolute advantage of this calendar is there is free worldwide shipping coupled with UK VAT at 20% removed at checkout. You do pay import taxes but I live in a 5% import tax region, so I am happy because this does not cost me £240 but much less.

However, if you are not into Skincare, then this is simply not the calendar for you.

Acknowledge that and look for another calendar (see below).

Also, if you don’t think much of Dr. Barbara Strum’s Hyaluronic Acid or Nature Bisse’s Diamond Lip booster, which together are about one-third of the calendar value, then you might want to give this a miss.
